With the state of emergency being extended for yet another month, I think it’s safe to say that this will go on at least into Spring 2013. The Tunisian people have (2) very challenging events coming up, namely the unveiling of the Constitution & Elections.
A simple review of recent headlines is enough to highlight the uncertainties & challenges concerning these historical events:
Tunisian Elections (Source: Tunisia Live):
Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali announced that the date for Tunisia’s upcoming legislative elections has been set for March 20, 2013—>(Possible Conflict)—>During his speech, Jebali clarified that, in spite of the March 20 deadline, the elections cannot be held until the constitution has been fully ratified.—>While the deadline for completing the constitution has been set for October 23, 2012, members of the Constituent Assembly have expressed doubts concerning the feasibility of this deadline given the complicated procedures involved in both drafting and ratifying the constitution.
Tunisian Constitution (Source: AFP):
TUNIS — Tunisia’s new constitution will not be adopted before February 2013, the head of the drafting committee…after earlier announcing that it would be delayed until April.—>(Potential Conflict)–>The government had previously insisted it would meet an October deadline for ratifying the constitution, in order to hold planned general elections in March next year.
