“It would take at least 40 days without any new infection to be able to say that Tunisia has gone beyond this phase, due to the fact that the zero case does not mean that the virus no longer exists.”

Security | Free IconSecurity INSIGHT: Tunisia has started to ease lockdown measures, pointing to the relative success of the restrictions it imposed early on in the pandemic.  although schools will largely remain closed until September. Hairdressers officially opened on Monday, while cafes and mosques are due to reopen on 24 May.

Tunisia Receives Drones from China to aid COVID-19 fight

Tunisia’s nationwide lockdown began March 22, when it had just 75 confirmed cases. The UK, by contrast, did not impose a national lockdown until it had over 6,000 cases, while Italy did not go ahead with the measure until it recorded more than 9,000. Tunisia also took the early step of quarantining patients with mild symptoms in designated facilities such as hotels rather than allowing them to isolate at home as in Italy — a policy that doctors now say was a fatal flaw.

Authorities strictly enforced lockdown measures in high-risk areas, patrolling the streets and even arresting those in violation of quarantine and social distancing regulations.

Civil society groups and private businesses also played an important role in helping fight the virus. Some 150 Tunisian employees of a factory helped make face masks more accessible by self-isolating at their facility in order to produce 50,000 per day. Meanwhile, numerous start-ups and civil society groups mobilized to develop and provide innovative medical protective gear to hospitals and deliver aid packages to those in need.

3 Lessons from the Queen’s COVID-19 Speech that we can ALL learn from today…

On Sunday, April 5th Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II addressed the nation in a rare televised speech and called for unity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

What she said was EMPOWERING!

After reviewing her speech I was able to pull out 3 Lessons that we can all benefit from during these challenging times.

Lesson#1- Think BIG Picture!

Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it,” the Queen said. “I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge.”

Speaking in a pre-recorded video shot at Windsor Castle, the Queen took on a forward-thinking tone. As we deal with this unprecedented crisis many of us are looking for the “light at the end of the tunnel” and when the Queen stated “in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride…” she enabled her audience to look past the current situation and consider the BIG picture.

Big picture thinking enables people to let go of their current fears and consider that no matter how bad things are now this too…shall pass.

“If you think small, your world will be small. If you think big, your world will be big.” — Paulo Coelho

Lesson #2-TEAM Work makes things work!

“The moments when the United Kingdom has come together to applaud its care and essential workers will be remembered as an expression of our national spirit; and its symbol will be the rainbows drawn by children,” she said.”

Everyone agrees that teamwork is essential to success yet it is seldom practiced in corporation and governments. When the Queen highlighted the amazing work of her nation’s essential workers she motivated them and Maslow’s hierarchy shows us that recognition is the KEY to organizational success.

Lesson #3- Authenticity is EMPOWERING!

This “challenging” time…”It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety,” the Queen said, adding “today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones.”

By sharing a personal story about a challenging time in her life, the Queen was able to create an “authentic moment”. Authentic leaders share stories to connect with their audience.

In this case the Queen talked about a time of great uncertainty (WWII) and how she was able to positively contribute in her own small way. This story is very powerful on many levels. Most importantly it makes her appear “human”…a viewer could easily think “oh ….wow…the Queen was once a child and she went through World War II…” This realization leads to a connection that cultivates courage in the sense of “if she can do it so can I!”.

@DavidSecurity Take

Security professionals can take a lot from the Queen speech because we’re often in a position to advise, empower and lead others.

By thinking BIG we can liberate ourselves from the current “crisis” and think long term. Teamwork is something we can never have too much of because security is all about collaboration. Lastly, the only way that people and organizations will listen to us in challenging moments is if we’re authentic.

Let’s all learn to apply the Queen’s lessons and use her story as fuel to get past this challenging time.

How Prince Charles FAILED his Social Distancing test….

Prince Charles now has IT. We all know what IT is so let’s get into it.

On Wednesday, March 25 it was announced that the Prince of Wales, (71 and first in line to the British throne)  tested positive for the coronavirus.

In this post I want to briefly outline what I think the Prince did right and more importantly how I think it got it WRONG.

Charles loves to Travel!

According to Travel + Leisure, the future monarch and queen consort actually spend the most out of any of the royals. In 2017, the family as a whole racked up a bill of over $6 million dollars for their travels.

The most expensive trip that year was, of course, Charles and Camilla, whose visit to Italy, Austria, and Romania in the time span of just over a week cost well over $200,000.

Where Prince Charles got it RIGHT…

On March 13, Prince Charles and his wife announced they were canceling their spring tour due to the escalating coronavirus pandemic. The pair had been set to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Jordan.

By canceling their spring tour the Royals not only make a good decision for their own health but they also gave UK citizens as well as the reset of the world a good example of making safe decisions during the pandemic.

Well done Prince Charles!

Where he got it WRONG…

When I read the article concerning the prince’s positive test result one particular line got my attention: “The prince has carried out a high number of public engagements during the past few weeks and therefore it was not possible to know when or where exactly he had caught the virus, the statement said.”

Basically what this means is that the Prince did not practice effective social distancing in spite of being HIGH RISK due to his age.

Thankfully…

Prince Charles is now self-isolating and working from home at the Balmoral Estate in Scotland. His wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, tested negative for the virus, the statement said.

The Prince of Wales is experiencing mild symptoms “but otherwise remains in good health,” Clarence House said in a statement.

Please don’t be like Prince Charles. If you’re over the age of 65 you’re basically automattically HIGH RISK. According to the CDC “8 out of 10 deaths reported in the U.S. have been in adults 65 years old and older.”

So there you have it. COVID-19 doesn’t even respect royalty so do your part and Stay Healthy!

5 Minute Shelter-In-Place overview COVID-19 edition…

While the term “shelter in place” has traditionally been used in association with natural disasters or chemical incidents, it is now being used for COVID-19.

In simple terms, it means all non-essential trips from your home would not be allowed for a certain period of time. The length is set by local leaders or the governor, depending on whether the order is issued at the county or state level.

5 Minute Overview of Shelter In Place…

The goal is to keep people away from each other, as much as possible, to help stop the spread of COVID-19. It’s all about social distancing, which is one of the strategies that helps limit the spread of COVID-19.

If a stay-at-home order is put in place, you are still allowed to make trips to the grocery store, go to get tested or drive to an ‘essential’ job. But trips to the hair salon, local bar or dinner parties are not.

General Guidelines…

  • Stay at home. They can leave for essential activities like grocery shopping, doctors visits and getting equipment needed to work from home. They can also leave to care for a family member or pet in another household.
  • Exercising outside is allowed, but you must be no closer than 6 feet from others.
  • Religious services can be done thorough broadcasts but not in person. There are restrictions on the numbers of staff members for the recordings.
  • Elective medical, surgical and dental procedures are prohibited in the county.
  • Businesses — except for essential businesses, such as hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores and gas stations — should stop operations at facilities in the county. Employees can work from home.

Stay Safe and be healthy!

3 Effective Ways to Practice”Social Distancing”

“Social Distancing” is the current buzz word when it comes to effective methods of protecting yourself against COVID-19. Dr. Martin (San Francisco epidemiologists) recently stated that: Social Distancing is currently the most important factor we can control in the COVID-19 outbreak, and therefore critical.”

While most people NEVER heard the term “Social Distancing” before COVID-19; I learned about it at boot camp. Let me explain…

1 Arm’s Distance!

Paris Island, South Carolina home to Marine Corps Recruit Depot is the training facility for all enlisted Marines east of the Mississippi. I will never forget the sensation of fear I felt the first time I arrived to this dreaded place and heard the terrifying sound of the Drill Instructor saying: “One arm’s distance RECRUIT!”

Later I learned why the DI was ordering us to stay 1 arm’s distance apart. During boot camp all recruits are told they must keep a one arm distance between them and the drill instructors at all times. A rule that if violated would quickly get you in a world of pain.

And that’s how I learned to keep 1 arm’s distance from a threat 🙂

3 Tips for Effective Social Distancing

The CDC defines social distancing as it applies to COVID-19 as “remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible.”

When it comes to Social Distancing here’s an easy was to remember how to apply it: Adhere, Avoid, Address (Think AAA!)

Tip #1-Adhere:

The CDC has a vast amount of information and practical guidelines dealing with Social Distancing. It’s important that we adhere to these guidelines and at the minimum we keep distance from each other (about 6 feet or 2 meters).

Tip #2-AVOID

Avoid “high risk” areas or simply crowded places (such as shopping centers and movie theaters) and limit your activities in public.

Tip #3 Address

We’re social animals so therefore Social Distancing does NOT come “natural” to us. Make sure you address the elephant in the room by stating why you’re not shaking hands if the situation becomes awkward. Be the leader in the room and don’t be afraid to state why you’re practicing Social Distancing.

Be a Social Distancing Leader in your circle! Set the example and remember…we’re all in this TOGETHER!

Stay Safe…Be Healthy!
